An Invitation To Take Part in Research about the experiences of young people who hear voices, and their families, of mental health services and professionals
- Are you, or is a member of your family, a young person who hears voices?
- Have you met counsellors, doctors, psychologists or other professionals about this?
- Would you like to share these experiences to help people understand what this is like and how they can be more helpful?
- Do you live in, or can you easily travel to, London (UK)?
Introduction
My name is Prerna Kapur. I am a student at the Anna Freud Centre and University College London. I am doing a study on the experiences of young people who hear voices and their families. I am trying to understand and gain knowledge about the professional help or mental health services that they have received, and whether it has been useful for them or not.
Q. What would it involve?
If you would like to take part, I will arrange to meet with you for an interview at a time and place that suits you. This is so that we can have a chat about your experiences of any help you, or your family member, have had for dealing with the voices. I'll ask some questions to help you tell your story, but the important thing is that it's YOUR story. You choose how much, or how little, you tell me. There are no right or wrong answers, I'm there to learn not judge.
Q. What will you do with what I tell you?
To help me remember what you've told me, I'd like to tape record our conversation. Afterwards, I will listen to this and write down what we say to each other. During the study, I'll meet with a few different families and will be able to see what things are shared and what is different. I'll write a report for my course, and share what I've learnt with young people, families and professionals.
Q. Is it anonymous?
Yes. You don't have to say your name into the tape recorder, and I wont use your name in anything that I write.
Q. Why are you doing this research?
I hope that what I learn from the study will help in understanding your and your family’s side of the story. I hope that I will be able to recognize the needs of people at the receiving end of the service, so that their feedback can be valued and used into the professional’s understanding of experiences of care. I hope that eventually such studies can help change the health system to meet your needs and requirements.
Q. How can I get involved?
